- Welcome to our first class!
First of all, let´s remember...
What is recycling?
Recycling is making something new from something that has been used before. For instance, you can make flower pots out of plastic bottles.
Here we have an example:

As you are pretending to be ecologists, it is important for you to know what are good things or bad things to do for the planet. You will enter a link where you will paint good things to do purple and bad things to do pink.

Good work!
Let's read!
You are going to read about five problems we have to solve to take care of the planet. As ecologists, you will have to find the possible solutions.
- First read the problems that are below...
1. Leaving the Lights On
You have probably heard this a million times before but turning the light off when you leave the room, even if you are only going for a few minutes, it really does make a difference to the environment since it saves a finite source of energy that can’t be replaced.

2. Using Plastic Bags
It’s hard to make the connection between the single plastic bag you get at the grocery store once a week, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. However, there is a strong likelihood that the plastic bags you bring home end will end up in the ocean.

3. Leaving the Tap Running
Whether you’re washing the dishes or brushing your teeth, leaving the tap running while you do so wastes a vast amount of water. It may seem like a small water saving, but soaking dishes before washing them and turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth really does reduce the amount of water you use.

4. Not Recycling
There are not unlimited resources on the Earth, nor is there unlimited space to be used for landfills. There is simply no excuse for not recycling.
5. Dropping litter everywhere.
What about the tons of garbage you have been throwing away? If you are the kind of person who enjoys littering then there is a big problem. Not for you but certainly for the environment. Are you connected with it? You most certainly are.
- Now, chose the correct possible solutions for each problem from the list below. Write the answers in your notebook.
A. Consider buy a tote or cloth bag instead and make a habit of keeping it in your pocket or bag.
B. Therefore, all you need to do is either recycle your garbage or put it safely in a trash can.
C. You can help reduce pollution just by putting that soda can in a different bin.
D. If you’re forgetful or other people in your household are, you might benefit from putting stickers, or post-it notes next to light switches to remind householders to save energy by turning lights off when leaving the room.
E. Again, stickers or post-it notes placed next to taps can help to remind you to save water when you can.

Let's listen!
Now you are going to hear a conversation between Kathy and David. Kathy is telling to her brother about some tips to take care of the planet.
- Listen and number from 1 to 5 the actions that Kathy mentions.
